This slab and coil vase took is a self portrait of sorts. I experimented with letting myself just go with a bare form and put the whole thing right in the wood fire. The way woodfired kilns get so hot, and burn for such a long while, means that if you don't glaze the pot, the elements within the clay melt into a glaze of ash and silica already contained within the material. You can never predict color or patterns. There are subtle glaze reactions all over, including tiny gold flecks in the sunlight and deep auburn variations highlighting the natural beauty of the clay. The form is friendly and pudgy, just waiting to show off the real show stoppers. I only get to slip a few pieces into a wood kiln a couple times a year so this is a special treat.
